RAIN PAVILION

A natural water collector
Individual Project 2022
132 Lichfield St, Christchur
ch

The pavilion serves as a connecting hub, celebrating public spaces by harnessing rainwater from a simulated river. Its purpose is to unite and engage with neighboring entities like Smash Palace, Dux, and Rourora Park.

This versatile space hosts a range of performance arts and music activities, both day and night.

In daylight, it offers solace for seating and leisure, allowing contemplation of the surroundings. By night, the cascading water augments presentations by local artists.

Furthermore, the roof structure doubles as a rainwater collection system, nourishing the surrounding garden through filtration and reuse.

Central to this concept is empowering people to steward water—a shared resource for all life forms, humans, animals, and plants—embodied in the phrase “Water supports life.”

The enclosed vegetation symbolizes renewal and rejuvenation, akin to time’s passage over the structure.

Functioning as a sustainable strategy, the pavilion harmonizes with people’s inherent connection to nature, marrying the attributes of a river’s natural space with a communal one.
